In Guatemala, a terrible civil war happened. [3, 10] During this war, 36 Mayan women were assaulted. [42, 49] This means they were attacked violently.
For many years, the crimes against them went unpunished. [4, 7] The men who committed these acts lived freely, without facing any consequences for their terrible actions.
Almost four decades passed, which is about forty years. [8, 20] The women lived with their painful memories every day, but they showed great strength and resilience.
They realized that staying silent would not bring them peace. They decided to unite and support one another to finally seek what they deserved.
Together, they made a final attempt to get justice. They knew it would be a difficult fight, but they were ready to share their stories in court.
